Railway u13 boys travel to Cork to support the Irish u16 boys

Railway Junior Hockey18 Jul 2024 - 19:12

The u13 boys travelled to Cork to watch Ireland u16 boys v Netherlands and also played the Munster 13 Development squads

The Railway boys u13s travelled down to Cork on Wednesday to support the Ireland u16 boys as they took on Netherlands with Toby O’Connell, Rob O’Brien and Jonny Woods in the squad. The match was much closer than spectators might have thought and both sides had chances to win it in the final quarter but the match finished 0-0 which is a fantastic achievement against one of the only countries in world hockey that Ireland men have never beaten at senior level.

In addition to the match the Railway u13 boys along with a Dublin u13 boys invitational team were invited to play against the Munster u13 boys at the upper pitch at Garryduff. The matches were very close encounters with both the visiting goalkeepers much more in the action despite Railway boys winning both their matches and the Dublin u13 Invitational team drawing one and winning one.

Also, a big congrats to Toby Slye O'Connell (Railway Union HC, St Matthews NS and St Andrews College 3rd yr - TY) who was voted u16 boys players of the tournament

It was a great experience for the lads to see top class underage hockey and then play Munster u13s after that with some great skills in show and plenty of players that will face each other in years to come at provincial level.
A big thanks to Karen, Wes and Clive for the invite to play the games and for Cork C of I for hosting the games and the food after the match, and to the parents who drove down and back on the day.
