Reduce the water requirement for watering the pitch
Railway’s hockey pitch is water based which means it requires watering prior to each training session or match and this increases during dry periods.
Currently our pitch is watered using ground level water rain guns located at the perimeter of the pitch. As a result there is a great amount of water wastage of water spraying off the pitch and this increases when the wind strengthens which is a common occurrence with a pitch close proximity to the coast.
An environmental and sustainability initiative that would significantly reduce our water wastage would be to use mobile water sprinklers located from the centre of the pitch. The biggest benefit would be this would reduce the amount of water required as all water used would fall on the pitch and not the off the pitch.
Benefit
We estimate we use 100,000 litres of water per week watering the pitch for an estimated 25 weeks of the year = 2,500,000 litres of water per year.
We forecast we can reduce this by 30% through using a centralised irrigation system and hence reduce our requirement by 750,000 litres. Reducing water usage is one of our key environmental and sustainability priorities and the clubs has applied for funds from Cash 4 Clubs received would allow us to implement this.
